The Diversion Lamp repurposes discarded bentwood café furniture as the raw material for a new composition. It originates from a moment of seeing a decomposing street side 1900’s Thonet as not a chair, but a collection of elegant parts. The chair as a whole had shed its original function, but as an assembly of individual elements it offered a new opportunity. Each component (leg, arm, back, rail) was transformed. New custom curvatures were formed by chopping, splicing, and hand pegged jointing. The final piece includes an up-cycled glass element and refashioned original metal hardware.
