SUMMER SHORTS

an evening of short surf films, food, drinks & DJs

SATURDAY, JULY 15th, 6pm

Arverne Cinema, Rockaway NYC

We're pleased to announce Summer Shorts as part of the Head Hi Summer 2023 season of cultural programming and are excited to bring it back to the Rockaways (where Head Hi began in an un-used garage space in 2017). Join us for an evening of short surf films, food, drinks & DJs at the Arverne Cinema, a wonderful outdoor space by the Jamaica Bay, in Rockaway Queens, NYC run by the team at the Rockaway Film Festival.

The independent films we selected showcase the raddest surfing by the best and stylish free-riders of our time including: In Search of Balance by Alex Partick, México; The Rolling East by Ben Potter, US; Natural High by Jack Coleman, Australia + US; and A New Wave by Sandra Winther, Denmark + South Africa. Thanks so much to all the directors for their inspiring films and for being part of Summer Shorts 2023.

At the event, enjoy delicious Vietnamese food by Bé Bep, refreshing drinks by Head Hi, Churros made on-site by Churrero and browse through the publications (including the latest issue of Emocean magazine) and vintage posters for sale, all while DJs play summer tunes and the sun goes down. DJ sets included by Filipe Zapelini (Brazil / NY), Erosika (Rockaway NY) and Mösco Disco (México / NY).

Event starts at 6pm, we invite you to dine, drink and enjoy the open space with our community. Films will start when the sun goes down.

FOOD BY BÉ BEP

Bé Bếp celebrates the diversity of Vietnamese cuisine. Drawing from traditional cooking methods and family recipes, chef and founder Phoebe Tran creates dishes that aim to capture the flavors of her childhood and travels across Vietnam. Her distinct approach to Vietnamese food centers seasonality and community, and she carries this ethos through all of Bé Bếp’s popups and events. As a farmer, Phoebe is focused on trialing Southeast Asian herbs and vegetables as a means to preserve culturally relevant seeds and remain rooted in her practice on land. @bebep.babykitchen

TREATS BY CHURRERO

Churrero is inspired by the churros of Southern California—from the churro trucks of Los Angeles to the churro stands in old town San Diego. Churrero churros are light and airy, with a golden brown shell, fried to order and perfect as a delectable treat. Their dark-chocolate dipping sauce has a hint of chili and perfectly compliments the special cinnamon sugar blend of their churros. @churrero.churrero

SPARKILING REFRESHMENTS BY LIMO

Created and designed in Zurich, Switzerland, produced locally in Brooklyn NY. 100% natural ingredients, no additives or artificial flavors, locally produced, little sugar, vegan, & GMO free.

PLOVER PROJECT

Plover Project is a group of New Yorkers working to fiercely protect endangered piping plovers and other shorebirds that nest on our city's beaches. About 100 Piping Plovers have nested in NYC in recent years, and between 6,000-8,000 plovers remain globally. In NYC, few of their chicks survive. This must change. They need our help. Join us! nycploverproject.org

COFFEE BY PARLOR

From their repurposed carriage house right across the street from Head Hi, Parlor roasts coffee for shops and home brewers across the globe. They advocate for producers and pursue transparent relationships with their network of partners all along the supply chain—and they do it with the same spirit and commitment that drive their pursuit of consistency in roasting excellence. @parlorcoffee

SURFRIDER FOUNDATION

The Surfrider Foundation is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves and beaches, for all people, through a powerful activist network. nyc.surfrider.org
