Emocean is an everyperson surf magazine that champions diverse perspectives, radical creativity, relatability, empowerment, and especially the narratives of women, BIPOC and LGBTQ+ surfers.

Issue 7's theme is Pain, featuring artwork by Markus Uran, a bizarre and interesting series titled Sharp Objects he made using Artificial Intelligence software. Imaginary objects, creatures and concepts around surfing and the sea. Markus is a dear friend of Head Hi and we're always stoked to catch waves with him in the Rockaways, NYC's closest surfing beach.

Other exciting stories in Issue 7 include:

  • In "California Double", Josiah Sylstra shares his passions, art and surfing.

  • Conner Smith writes about the Tahitian community fighting to conserve and protect Teahupo'o, their land and reef break, from a tower of doom built for the 2024 Olympics.

  • For "Locals: Bull Bay", Bailey Rebecca Roberts takes us to the Caribbean island of Jamaica.

  • In "Show Me Where it Hurts" Matt L. Roar and illustrator by Justin Valdes explore the magazine's theme of pain.

  • Imogene Barron's documentation in "Water Buffalo Stories"  share more about a remote Indonesian island's new surf scene and ancient living textile tradition.

  • "The Tao of Kai" by Leo Maxam features Bali's surfer & rising star Kailani Johnson accompanies by photos by Falkwyn De Goyeneche.

  • Coco Ho and Laura Enever share about dropping out from competitions and approaching surfing for fun, free expression and surfboard design in "Welcome to the Fun Tour".
